Volume 10 of Red Magazine – The Island Storybook, edited by David Weale, highlights Island life and culture.
RED Magazine is celebrating a milestone with a ‘new-look’ Volume #10. It is now on book-stands across the Island with stories from a wide cross-section of Island authors, including first-time contributors Michael Brothers, Gary Gallant, Sandi Clark, Garth MacPhee, Debbie Inman, Keith Milligan, Lou Daley, Jocelyn Thorne, and Molly Youngerman.
Among the stories in this most recent issue: one by well-known Island author Marian Bruce about a beloved horse companion; the poignant story of a beloved neighbour by Keith Milligan; and the moving story of how a returned soldier fulfilled the wish of his wartime buddy who died in his arms at the front.
This issue also features the first of a series of photo-essays called ‘Shutter Stories’ by well known Island author, Georges Arsenault, and the first in a series of short stories called ‘Senior Moments’ by Davy Weale. As well, Gary Evans writes humourously and self-deprecatingly of his youthful attempt to become the first Amway salesman in Morell and environs; Sylvia Poirier, The Convent Girl, recalls with mixed feelings her youthful experience with ‘Protestant Boys’; Jim MacDonald of Souris writes of an unpleasant encounter with Prime Minister John Diefenbaker; and JP Arsenault gives a blow by blow description of the ‘fight culture’ of rural PEI in his short story, Brawl at Yellow Tiger.
Since its inception five years ago, RED has featured the work of over 100 gifted writers and storytellers, and according to Assistant Editor Davy Weale, “We’ve just scratched the surface of the rich deposit of talent and stories that exists on this Island.”
