Volume 13 of Red Magazine – The Island Storybook, edited by David Weale, highlights Island life and culture.
The latest issue of RED: The Island Storybook has gone a little Haywire. All of which is to say that the Charlottetown band of that name that was popular across the country and beyond in the 1980s and 1990s, is featured in our cover photograph. Also, inside is an article by Davy Weale that examines the heyday years of the ‘bad bad boys’, as well as their current plans, including the release of a new album sometime soon.
This issue also includes two new photographic features. The first, entitled Whimsy, is a collection of photos from several Island communities that reveal the artistic, often whimsical, ways that Islanders decorate their yards and homes. The second is called Ruins and Relics, and in this issue there is a striking photo of an old Island breakwater. Like Whimsy it will be an ongoing project, and both feature the work of photographer Ann Winslow.
Many writers in this issue will be familiar to the readers of RED, but a number of new authors are also introduced. One of them is well-known storyteller, Alan Buchanan, who has written a bitter-sweet story of the year two of his sisters, along with other children in the community, were exposed to polio at the Christmas Concert. Another is by a woman from Mount Forest, Ontario, Jennifer Cochrane, who fell in love with the landscape of PEI while watching Chef Michael Smith on The Food Channel, then met a man with PEI roots and now spends her summers here with her family.
There is also an interesting little Red Carpet story about the day the brilliant and notorious Oscar Wilde came to Town.
