Volume 16 of Red Magazine – The Island Storybook, edited by David Weale, highlights Island life and culture.
The March edition (#16) introduces a brand new feature called ‘KEEPSAKE’ which will feature a large portrait of an Island senior holding a cherished keepsake from their youth, along with the story of why that object is precious to them. The first Islander in the series is well-known heritage activist Catherine Hennessey from Charlottetown, and the object she chose was a tool used by her physician father.
Another article that will be of great interest to many Islanders is a reminiscence by Sylvia Poirier of her early encounters as a student nurse with pediatrician Dr. John Hubert ‘Sock’ O’Hanley, a man renowned for both his grumpy demeanor and his skill and compassion as a physician.
Another series that begins in this issue (#16) is called ‘WHORE OF A DAY’ and recounts the adventures of Islanders that arose because of stormy or inclement weather. In the first episode, one daring adventurer recalls what turned out to be a harrowing trip to the local bootlegger in the midst of the infamous White Juan snowstorm.
A third new series being introduced in volume #16 is entitled ‘SCRAPPERS: Fight Culture of the Island’ and leading off is the always popular RED contributor, Dale Small with a story called ‘MY BROTHER: The Blue-eyed Scrapper’.
And what are the chances of walking into a hotel lobby to get out of the weather and accidently getting to meet seven of the greatest hockey legends of all time, including ‘Rocket’ Richard, Gordie Howe and Bobby Hull. Gerry Hopkirk tells that story.
